To finish our Old City tour, we walked on to the south side of the lake where you can catch a gondola up to a “sunset overlook.” For just about a dollar each, we rode up to the top of a ridge overlooking the entire, quite expansive city on one side and the City Palace and lake on the other. When I was first coming into the city from the airport, Vivek (my mentor – more on him later) told me that he really loved Udaipur because it was such a small city – only 500,000 people!

Bear in mind that I could have taken this same shot, practically, going around 360 degrees – the city looks huge to me, and it sits in the center of a ring of those lovely Aravalli Hills…

‘Twas a wonderful day, with two great new friends. (Ayan, by the way is a doctor, who fixed me up quite right when I was sick this weekend and Sourav really is a Tech Guru; he’s already fixed my corrupt camera card and salvaged all my photos AND hooked me up with some necessary programs. I seem to get by with more than just a little help…).
So, I’ll leave you this post with some photos of a dance performance a few of us went to last week. It was held at some temple/museum on the lake and featured examples of traditional music and performance from around Rajasthan State. Most of the photos are of this amazing woman who was dancing to honor the many rural Rajastahni women who are known for carrying NINE water pots, on their heads, for often many kilometers EVERY DAY to get fresh water. It obviously requires some serious skill and dexterity and this dance was immensely impressive.

The photo of her dancing with the nine pots got axed by Brian – it was too fuzzy, (I know I’m not supposed to talk about the “behind the scenes stuff,” bri – sorry!), but just know that she did have nine pots on her head at one time and she danced on glass, along with twirling all around the room! Unbelievable!

Ok, my wonderful friends and family. I hope this satiates your appetite for a few days. I know you’re all wondering about my job and my living situation and all that jazz… I will post again in a few days. I do pretty much know what I’ll be doing here and I’ve already been out “in the field” to some rural villages, where I’ll actually be spending a significant amount of time in the coming months! I’ll be back in a day or two with more tales and more photos…
May you all be well, happy and peaceful – as I am!!
xoxo
